ODHA Summons Ministry Of Environment In A Bid To Tackle Flooding And Parking On Highways


In a quest to stepdown further flood inclined harms and more disruptions and accident on our roads; the speaker of Ondo House of Assembly; Rt. Hon Bamidele David Oleyelogun at Plenary session on Wednesday, 9th October raised matters of public urgency on the flooding in Akungba where Doyinsola Motunrayo Boluwaji, a final year student of the Adekunle Ajasin University got drowned.

Before the Speaker opened the floor for members' reactions, he mentioned his dissatisfaction to indiscriminate packing of motorist on highways.

In his reaction, the lawmaker representing Akoko South West Constituency1 Honourable Olugbenga Omole pitied the situation of a 400 level student of the Adekunle Ajasin University that got drowned.

Honourable Omole stressed that urgent steps must be taken to avert such disaster in the future.
Also speaking, the lawmaker representing Akoko South West Constituency 2 Honourable Felemu Gud Bankole while empathising with the parents of the deceased student, the University and Akungba community, blamed the incident on obstruction of drainages and the waterways.

He called on people to stop dropping refuse in waterways and stop erecting buldings in water channels to prevent flooding.

In the same vein, the lawmaker representing Ondo West Constituency 1, Honourable Tomide Akinribido lamented the plight of his constituents in June this year during which valuable properties were lost to flooding.

According to him 'an aged woman caught in the web of the flood later died because of the complications that emanated from the flooding'.

He called on relevant agencies to rise to the challenges of saving lives and property whenever such disasters occur.

Consequent upon this, Majority leader of the House, Honourable Jamiu Sulaimon Maito Moved a motion and was seconded by Honourable Akinribido that the Ministry of Environment should be invited to explain its efforts at tackling flooding across the state.

Speaking on the House resolution, Speaker of the House, Rt. Honourable David Bamidele Oleyelogun commiserated with the parents of the deceased student of Adekunle Ajasin University, who got drowned in the Akungba flooding.

He raised a team of lawmakers to visit the parents of the deceased student, as well as the University community to express the condolences of members on the sad incident.

The Speaker equally called on residents to stop building houses on waterways while dumping of refuse in drainages should stop henceforth.
The House also later dwelled extensively on need for motorists to stop indiscriminate parking on highways to Check carnages on the road.
