5 Causes of Body Odor in Women and Effective Ways to Overcome Them

Studies have revealed that the appeal of womenfolk is not only limited to facial beauty, but also to body smell. In fact, body smell is actually one of the most dominant factors in arousing sexual interest. That is why many women are worried whenever they notice that an unpleasant smell or odor is coming out of their body.

Finding the cause of body odor is the right step to overcome this problem. Because, although it is a common belief that body odor is caused by sweating, it is precisely the sweat produced by the apocrine glands found in the body parts where hair grows mainly in the armpits of women, but the sweat that produces unpleasant odor arises because it is triggered by other external factors.

In other words, the causes of female body odor and how to overcome it have a close relationship, because by knowing the cause, we will be able to overcome it easily, both through prevention or by expelling/eliminating unpleasant odors that stick to the body.

Causes of Women's Body Odor

Male armpits and female armpits are actually not different. In other words the cause of body odor itself actually does not distinguish gender, meaning that the cause of body odor in women is actually not much different from men. Some of these causes include the following:

1. Genetic Factors

There are a number of people whose body odor are as a result of hereditary factors, for example, trimethylaminuria is an hereditary disorder that happens when the body mutates a gene called flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3) which also affects the activity of the FMO3 enzyme(an enzyme that converts the fish-smelling trimethylamine to trimethylamine N-oxide, an odorless compound).

This disorder affects the proper digestion of food such as meat, liver, fish, eggs, legumes, and some vegetables when consumed, consequently, the accumulation of the aforementioned fish-smelling compound in the body leads to the release of a strong fishy odor in urine, breath, and sweat.

2. Stress

Stress can also bring about body odor in females, because when experiencing stress the production of sweat by the apocrine glands increases, and as we know, the sweat produced by the apocrine glands emits an unpleasant odor.

3. Diseases

Certain types of diseases can also cause body odor. One of them is diabetes. In diabetic patients who are in diabetic ketoacidosis condition, with low insulin levels, the body will break down fat to be used as fuel. This results in the formation of ketones in the body, and buildup of ketones can produce unpleasant odors.

4. Food

Among the many external factors that cause women's body odor, the most influencing factor is food.

Some Types of Food That Causes Body Odor

  • Spices

With its strong aroma, the spices when ingested will produce sulfur gas, which is absorbed by the blood and then eliminated through the lungs to cause bad breath in the mouth and via the skin pores to cause body odor.

  • Junk Food and Processed Foods

Junk Food and processed foods containing salt, sugar, white flour, and hydrogenated oils in excessive levels, when ingested will tend to rot in the stomach and lead to the production of bad breath and body odor.

  • Low Carbohydrates

Eating foods with low carbohydrate and high protein levels is another cause of body odor. This triggers the burning of fat in the body and results in the release of ketones into the bloodstream, causing sweat to give off an unpleasant odor.

  • Milk and Its Processed Products

Milk and various processed products that are rich in protein, when digested in the stomach will produce hydrogen sulfide which causes sweat to give off a pungent odor.

5. Poor Hygiene
